Zakynthos is the third biggest island, situated on the most southerly part of the Ionian-sea. It is famous of it?s emerald-coloured water and waiting the tourists with magical sights. It?s territory is 406 km2, the number of it?s inhabitants is 30 000. Because of it?s gentle climate, and hills covered by rich woods, plentiful, verdant valleies, and golden sandy beaches it was mentioned in the middle ages as the Flower of the East, Fiore de Levante. The island is a harmony of melodious songs, flavour of lavender, lights and colours.

The island is far away famous of its magnificient beaches, magic bays.
Approaching from East to the West, or from North to the South there are green gardens, tended grape and olive groves. The holiday resorts lie on the eastern part of the island beside the sandy beaches. The southern and western coasts are compelling with their great rocks, under water caves e.g. the famous Blue Caves. On the Eastern and Southern coastline is dotted with calm bays, but it has got a good road-system to explore the island. The inhabitants of Zakynthos are sensitive about their surroundings, so they saved large territories in the raw. With keeping balance of the nature they insured subsistence of rare marine animals. The curiosity of the island is the endangered sea turtle Caretta-caretta, who drops her eggs, cca 100 pieces between April and June, and after 50 days the babies come out. A special seal, the Monachus-monachus found shelter on the south-western part of the island.
The town of Zakynthos was built on the South-eastern part of the island. It has got impozing buildings, famous churches, and wonderful squares. The town lies at the bottom of the hill on which the castle is founded. The ocher coloured buildings remained from the past, with their venetian arcades and balconies, the Strada Marina on the shore, the famous Rouga, the business quarter famed by it?s scenic arches, the St. Mark square, each invites for a walk.

The surroundings of Bohali under the castle charms the visitors with it?s narrow and silent streets, old buildings, yards full of syringas, old cafes and restaurants from where sounds old Zakynthian music. Above Bohali crests the Venetian Castle with a wonderful panoramic view to the town and the Ionian sea.

LAGANAS
Laganas lies 8 km far from Zakynthos town ont ne southern coast. It has got the longest coastline with it?s 9 km long sandy beach. The island is an excellent holiday resort for every age-group. A lot of coffeterias, discos, bars, taverns, shops are awaiting for those who long for an active night life. It?s shoal coast is ideal for the families, it?s sandy beach is a real paradise for the children, and meanwhile it insures a lot of oportunities for those who like water sports.
Laganas-bay embraces around 3 little island: Pelouzo, Marathonisi, Agios Sostis. TThe first and the second are can be approached by motor boat because the bigger ships are forbidden from this area to save the swimming sea turtles. The beach of Marathonisi belongs to the most wonderfuls, to aarive here takes a few minutes by boat, but it?s worth while.
Agios Sostis lies 1,5 km far from the center of Laganas. It is a friendly holiday village which draw attention with it?s extremely clean and sandy beaches. The sea is slowly deepening here, and has pleasant temperature already in June. Lots of supermarkets, restaurants, coctail bars provide the high-level service. The island of Agios Sostis (disco island) is an excellent bathing place at daylight, and fantastic pleasure-ground at night. The symbol of Zakynthos island is the ship wreck, we shouldn?t leave the island not to visit here. This place is the most visited point of the island. The turquoise bay, white rocks, romantic, majestical rusting wreck ? is an obligatory program anyway. It is an unforgettable sight from above and underhand as well.
Good advice: Wearing shoes is not adventageous, because it can be happen that you have to take off the ship into knee-high water. You can climb the ship wreck in proper foot-wear.
